From the Red Line to 'As the World Turns,' they're there

The class of 1954 has a wide range of notables who have achieved fame in their various fields. Here's a look at several:

Robert S. Schwarz -- worked in television for 40 years, directing the ''Ed Sullivan Show," ''The Electric Company," ''Sesame Street," and ''As the World Turns."

Ivan Chermayeff -- did the design of the National Park Service signage system and the logo for Xerox Corp., NBC, Chase Manhattan Bank, and Time Warner.

Calvert Watkins -- discovered that the Trojans spoke an ancient Indo-European language called Luvian.

William Morris Weber -- developed the square, aluminum portion control package for fruit jams, jellies, and syrup.

Ronald J. Messer -- lives in the oldest continuously lived-in house in New England. The home, called the Red House, was built in 1646 and is on the North River in North Marshfield.

Miller Day Malcom -- Was the architectural coordinator for the MBTA as the Red Line extended north through Harvard Square. He also worked on the Ted Williams Tunnel and the Alewife, Central, and Kendall stations of the T.

Robert H. Mundheim -- Was one of the lead negotiators during the Iranian hostage crisis in 1981.

John Chester Culver -- served five terms in the US House and one term in the Senate.

Francisco Jose Elizalde -- has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1985.

H. Daniel Lewis Jr. -- directed the clinical trial that first proved in the early 1980s that aspirin prevents heart attacks.

Edward Hoagland -- essayist and nature/travel writer, with about 20 published titles.

George D. Langdon Jr. -- Was the president of Colgate University and worked at the American Museum of Natural History.

Ralph Blum -- has written 10 books, including ''Zen in the Art of Archery" and ''The Book of Runes."

Richard Oldenburg -- former director of New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Frank Cahouet -- the former chairman and CEO, Mellon Bank Corp.

Edward C. Johnson III -- chairman and CEO, Fidelity Investments.

Minoru Ben Makihara -- CEO of Mitsubishi Corp.
